WNY Imaging Group MRI Procedures

Using a powerful magnetic field and radio waves magnetic resonance imaging procedures produce extremely detailed images and are offered at our various ACR Accredited WNY Imaging locations.



MRI machines at WNY Imaging use powerful magnet and radio waves, without any ionizing radiation, to create clear and detailed cross sectional images of the body. Our well-trained radiologists are then able to evaluate the anatomy and thus diagnose many diseases, tumors, infection and other conditions from these images. In less than 24 hours, a report is transcribed and sent to your referring physician.

The technologist will be able to see, hear and speak to you throughout the duration of the 20-45 minute examination. Although the machine is noisy the procedure is painless. You will need to remove any metal objects from your body as they may interfere with or be damaged by the magnetic field during the procedure. Please inform your technologist if you have any of the following so that you may be accommodated accordingly:

  • Prosthetic Joints
  • Pacemaker, Defibrillator, or Artificial Heart Valve
  • Aneurysm Clips
  • Cochlear/Inner Ear Implants
  • Spinal Stimulator
  • Metal Plates Pins, Screws, Staples, or Bullets/Shrapnel
  • Transdermal Patch
  • Anxiety in Confined Spaces

3T, 1.5 High Field MRI Scan

These faster, more powerful scanners offer high resolution images that are clearer and easier to read. These scans can be completed up to two times faster than an open MRI. The new 3T scanner has a substantially shorter bore and larger width, which translates to more comfort for patients in a more spacious machine. In addition to these accommodations, both scanners have music systems for patients to listen to the radio, CDs, or an iPod for increased relaxation during the procedure.

High Field MRI

Our WNY Imaging location at Ken-Ton provides maximum patient comfort in a non-claustrophobic environment together with advanced MR performance features resulting in excellent high resolution image quality.

Other MRI Procedures

  • MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography)

    MRA looks at the blood flow in arteries and veins to detect any narrowing or stenosis. Although performed in the same manner as an MRI, WNY Imaging is able to perform many MRA procedures without contrast. An MRA is able to look at arteries including the carotids, brain, abdominal aorta, pelvic arteries and peripheral runoff. For patients with reduced renal function some MRA studies can be provided contrast-free. No IV or contrast injection is required and can be performed with the patient placed feet-first into the scanner.

  • Abdomen Pelvis MRI

    WNY Imaging Group administers MRI of the abdomen and pelvis to detect problems or tumors in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, uterus, ovaries and bladder. This procedure is conducted as a breath-hold scan with contrast. You’ll be injected with a “dye” through an IV for this procedure and asked to hold your breath.

  • Spine MRI

    Spine MRI scans, including cervical, thoracic and lumbar procedures, can find changes in the spine and surrounding tissues, such as:

    • Spinal alignment
    • Disc height and hydration
    • Vertebral body configuration
    • Appearances of the intervertebral disc (normal, bulging, herniated, dehydrated or degenerated)
    • Spinal canal size, which needs to be able to comfortably accommodate the spinal cord and nerves
    • Spinal cord or nerve root compression
    • Pinched or inflamed nerves
    • Spine abnormalities that may cause pain
    • Normal appearance and positioning of the spine
    • Post-surgery healing or recurrences
  • Breast MRI

    MRI of the breast is used as a supplemental tool to mammography and ultrasound. This specific MRI allows our radiologists to further evaluate any hard to see abnormalities visualized on a mammogram, evaluate breast implants or ruptures, determine the extent of disease after a diagnosis of breast cancer, and screen women who are at an increased risk for breast cancer. A breast MRI is painless and requires complete stillness for the duration of the approximately 25-minute procedure. Contrast (dye) is required, given through an IV for this procedure.
